Hi, I’m Joel Penney, and I’m an Assistant Professor at the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University. I received my PhD in 2011 from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, with a dissertation focusing on the phenomenon of political T-shirts. My current research focuses on the uses of participatory digital media platforms for political expression, mobilization, and collective identity-building. On this blog, I discuss issues related to political memes, viral videos, and other content circulating via social media. If you’re interested in any of these topics, please check out my scholarly publications! You can also contact me through my University page.
